You’ve heard of Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein. You’ve probably also heard of Mary’s husband, essayist Percy Shelley. Her friend, poet Lord Byron. Her mother, feminist Mary Wollstonecraft. And her father, novelist William Godwin.
But have you heard about The Idiot, by Claire Clairmont: Mary Shelley’s much less famous, equally aspirational, and considerably more unhinged step-sister?

One historic night in 1816 at Villa Diodati in Geneva, Mary became the mother of science fiction, penning Frankenstein at only 18 years old. The thing is, she never would have been there at all, if not for her sister Claire, who dragged her and Percy 800 miles across the continent to network with Claire’s crush, Lord Byron.
